The son of Ramchand B. Kripalani, Krishna was born at Karachi on 29 September He proceeded to London for higher studies. He studied for the Bar at Lincoln's Inn and London School of Economics for history, economics, political science, law and anthropology. Back in the country, initially at Karachi in , he started practising law in Lahore.

However, he was arrested for participating in the freedom movement which cut short his legal career. At that time, he was interested in learning Bengali. He and Jayaprakash Narayan, two senior guiding lights, were requested to choose the parliamentary leader of the new party who would be the prime minister, and they choose Morarji Desai. Jayaprakash Narayan, in wheel-chair, administered a pledge at Raj Ghat to new members of parliament that they will honour the mandate and remain united. A stamp was issued on 11 November by the Indian Postal Department to commemorate the st anniversary of his birth.
