Growing up in a bilingual home, Alex was fluent in both official languages. Trebek graduated from the University of Ottawa with a degree in Philosophy. He married Jean Currivan in and they had two children, Matthew and Emily. In , he received an honorary doctorate from the University and in , he received the Meritas Tabaret Award for Alumni Achievement, the top award bestowed on alumni by the University.
In , he became a naturalized citizen of the U. Alex suffered two heart attacks and in , he announced he had been diagnosed with stage IV pancreatic cancer. Guinness World Records gave Alex the world record for most episodes of a game show for his work on Jeopardy! The Royal Canadian Geographical Society awarded Alex its gold medal for his contribution to geographic education and the popular study of geography.
While the Covid, pandemic halted production on Jeopardy and scores of other television series early in , Alex continued to record intros for various repeat episodes of the series that continued to appear, in between undergoing various treatments for his cancer, and later hosted new episodes in which he and the contestants pobserved social distancing, and there was no audience.

After a long battle with pancreatic cancer, Trebek passed away "peacefully" at his home on November 8, , surrounded by his family and friends.
Trebek married Elaine Callei in , and they remained married for seven years before divorcing in In , he wed for a second time, to Jean Currivan, and they have two children, Emily and Matthew. Trebek was an active volunteer and spokesman for organizations such as World Vision and Smile Train, which help improve the lives of impoverished children around the world.
