I have always been fascinated by this fresh and delicate smell and taste. I used it in one of my first fragrance, Roland Garros for Men , in I discovered this spice drinking the very special tea they prepare in Rajastan. Impossible to forget. I use cardamom as often as I can.

When I was young, I spent my holidays on the Mediterranean sea where the tides are very small and the odour is weak. Both have the same type of smell due to the vegetation that grows there: cistus, everlasting, thyme, rosemary, fennel, and so on. I have always tried to recreate the odour of those places. Each one originated from a special rose growing in her garden or in mine or when we travelled and visited rose exhibitions.

A rose with a touch of grapefruit was the idea behind Rosissimo ; a rose with a touch of saffron and cardamom gave birth to Rose Kashmirie and a rose with a hint of cinnamon gave birth to the latest creation for her: Majalis. A rose scent seems simple but it is far more complex than it looks. Not really. I like to work on an accord and play around with some raw materials but I change depending on the fashion, mood or trend.

However, I always like to add a few rich and special naturals to my fragrances; they are complex and multi-faceted and bring depth to the fragrance. When I lived in Mumbai in India, I loved walking through the little non-tourist streets. For each photograph the artist disassembles the modular system of the skeleton and reconfigures the elements to form a new image.

These images are man made. Images of aggression, images that cause suffering, devastation and conflict. Robert intends the images to plant the notion of restraint and charity in an effort to promote peace and tolerance. When I was 13, my mother caught me taking a few coins from her visiting friend's purse. And so began the intrigue. In the Seventies, working as a photographer, I started to document what I found in people's bags and packets.

Busker and child — Sri Lanka Kandy, Robert manages the UK part of international fragrance brand Quintessence. It creates on average fragrances per year, of which will be used as fine fragrances and the rest in shampoos, shower gels, body lotions and other products. Each perfumer brings their own style to the job. Robert never buys fragrances and exclusively wears a blend that is unique to his family — the same recipe has been handed down from generation to generation.

Chypre refers to a lesser-known family of fragrances which are held in high regard for their subtle warm, dry and woody scents. They contain a lot of woody notes, animalic notes, a lot of dark notes that will last and give a beautiful trail to the fragrance. That is my style. Robert says he and Durande make good partners, because they have a similar way of interpreting scents.

Having an extremely sensitive sense of smell is not necessarily beneficial if you work as a perfumer, but having an exhaustive olfactory memory and vocabulary for smells is essential.
